Mila Kunis has opened up about the foundation of her long-lasting marriage to Ashton Kutcher, revealing why their relationship has stood the test of time.
The couple first met as teenagers while starring on That '70s Show. Although they remained friends for years, their relationship turned romantic in 2012. They married in July 2015 and have since built a family together.
During her appearance on the June 22 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Kunis reflected on what makes her marriage to Kutcher work.
"I married my best friend," the actress said, adding that reconnecting later in life made all the difference.
"I was 27, and I was a very different person than I was when I was 25, let alone when I was 21 or 19," Kunis explained. "You go through different changes, and you evolve. Hopefully you grow, you become different."
She believes their shared history gave them a unique advantage because they had already seen each other through every stage of life.
"He knew me through all of them, and I knew him through all of it, through the good, the bad, the ugly, and vice versa," she said. "So, when we reconnected, there was no getting to know each other. There was no, 'Let me tell you all these hidden secrets.'"
According to Kunis, the strength of their relationship comes from complete honesty and mutual respect. Because they have known each other since she was 14 and Kutcher was 19, there has never been a need to hide parts of themselves.
"It's seeing that people can grow and evolve," she continued. "It's also just knowing that at all moments in our lives, we will be able to grow together because we already have. And so, there's an ease about it. And there's a trust behind it."
Kunis and Kutcher, who have been married for nearly 11 years, share two children, daughter Wyatt and son Dimitri.
