Commentator warns the monarchy could be making a mistake by giving the York sisters a more visible role
Prince William has been drawn into a new royal debate following his recent public interaction with Princess Beatrice at Peter Phillips' wedding.
The discussion comes after comments attributed to the Prince of Wales in an interview with The Sunday Times, where he reportedly pledged to modernise the monarchy and "do things differently" in the future. Among the changes mentioned was his intention to prevent people who do not carry out official royal duties from living rent-free in royal residences.
The remarks have prompted renewed scrutiny of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie's place within the royal family.
Royal author Andrew Lownie, writing on his Substack, argued that the monarchy risks making a significant error by bringing the sisters back into greater public prominence.
"I still think the royal family are making a huge mistake bringing Beatrice and Eugenie so prominently back into the foreground of their group picture," Lownie wrote. He claimed some members of the public remain critical of the sisters and question the benefits they receive because of their royal status.
The commentator also speculated about whether Beatrice and Eugenie could be given more visible roles at upcoming royal events, including Trooping the Colour and Royal Ascot.
Lownie suggested their appearance in major ceremonies, such as the Royal Ascot carriage procession, would signal a continued willingness by the royal family to feature the York sisters more prominently despite criticism from some observers.
His comments add to the ongoing conversation about the future shape of the monarchy and the role non-working royals may play in public events under King Charles and, eventually, Prince William.
