Princess Diana ‘struggled with loneliness’ after separation, former butler reveals

Paul Burrell recalls late princess often asked staff to stay with her during quiet evenings

Princess Diana found it difficult to be alone following her separation from King Charles, according to her former butler Paul Burrell.

In his book A Royal Duty, Burrell describes how the late Princess of Wales often asked members of her household staff to remain with her longer in the evenings, especially when her sons, William and Harry, were at boarding school.

He recalled bringing her dinner and noticing that she preferred company rather than spending the night on her own.

“Stay a while,” she would say, a request he remembers hearing repeatedly.

Burrell said they would often talk casually about the day and upcoming plans, with conversations sometimes stretching longer than expected.

At times, Diana would reflect on what the next day might bring, expressing a sense that things could quickly change or become challenging.

Despite those moments of worry, Burrell noted that she would later head off to bed with a lighter mood, appearing more energetic as she prepared for the day ahead.
