Shakira has shared the heartfelt reason behind her nickname for her two sons, revealing that she credits her hit song Waka Waka for bringing them into her life.
In an interview with People magazine, the singer reflected on how recording the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup became a turning point in her personal life. It was during that period that she met former football star Gerard Piqué, with whom she later welcomed two children.
“That’s why I call my kids the ‘Waka’ kids; I think they were born because of that song,” Shakira said.
The singer explained that the global hit opened the door to life-changing experiences, including meeting Piqué and starting a family. “That song took me to the World Cup, the World Cup had an important impact in my life, and they were born — the best thing that has happened to me,” she added.
Shakira and Piqué ended their relationship in 2022 after more than a decade together. They share two sons, Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11.
The singer also recalled a memorable moment during her pregnancy with Sasha, saying fans seemed to notice she was expecting long before she confirmed the news publicly.
According to Shakira, supporters spotted subtle changes during a performance and immediately guessed she was pregnant, even though she was only in the early stages at the time.
Looking ahead, the singer expressed her excitement about the upcoming World Cup celebrations, describing the tournament as a unique event that unites people around the world.
“Every World Cup is really magical,” she said. “I think this one is going to be all about bringing people together in this very sensitive moment in time, socially and politically.”
For Shakira, the tournament remains especially meaningful, as it not only inspired one of her biggest hits but also helped shape the family she treasures most.
