King Charles and Prince William have been warned that any serious disagreement between them could be damaging to the monarchy, following reports of private tensions over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
According to media reports, the King and the Prince of Wales have different views on how the Royal Family should handle a possible reconciliation with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Some sources have claimed that Charles has become increasingly frustrated with William as tensions grow over royal duties and family matters. However, these claims have not been publicly confirmed by Buckingham Palace or Kensington Palace.
The reported disagreement is said to have intensified following Harry and Meghan’s visit to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams warned that a breakdown in the relationship between Charles and William would have serious consequences for the institution.
“The most disastrous thing that could happen to the monarchy would be a falling out between King Charles and Prince William, who, together with his family, is its future,” he said.
Fitzwilliams argued that the King and his eldest son need a united strategy when dealing with future visits from Harry and Meghan.
He suggested that William may be concerned that Harry’s appearances in Britain could dominate media coverage and overshadow the work being carried out by other senior members of the Royal Family.
“We know the King understandably wanted to see his grandchildren, and the Sussexes have subsequently been silent personally, but briefings have not ceased,” Fitzwilliams said.
He added that Harry and Meghan appear likely to make further visits to Britain.
“They want the King to see more of his grandchildren, which is totally understandable,” the royal expert said.
Despite continuing speculation, neither Charles nor William has publicly commented on reports of a disagreement between them.
