King Charles’ recent meeting with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their children at Highgrove House continues to draw attention, with royal commentators examining the monarch’s choices and the message behind them.
Royal writer Ingrid Seward believes the King handled the situation carefully, showing compassion as a father and grandfather without making any major concessions to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Speaking to Woman’s Day, Seward said Charles likely felt the meeting needed to happen while Harry’s entire family was in the UK.
“I’m sure Charles felt that he had to find time to do this while the whole family was here,” she said. “If he didn’t do it now, it would become an insurmountable problem.”
According to Seward, the meeting should not be seen as the King giving in to Harry’s demands. Instead, she described it as a grandfather taking the opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren.
“People are confusing compassion with capitulation,” she said.
Seward pointed to several things that did not happen during or after the visit. There was no official photograph, public appearance, joint statement or announcement suggesting Harry’s royal role had been restored.
She also noted that there was no reported change to his security arrangements or any wider constitutional decision.
“The monarchy gave away absolutely nothing,” Seward said.
The decision to hold the meeting at Highgrove was also viewed as significant. The Gloucestershire estate has a personal connection to Harry’s childhood and was once a family home he shared with King Charles and Princess Diana.
Seward claimed the King was pleased to show Archie and Lilibet around the property, which is known to be especially important to him.
However, she described the meeting as a “diplomatic interim moment” rather than proof of a complete reconciliation.
“It had to be done for Harry, for the King and for the grandchildren,” she said.
While some reports have suggested Harry wants his children to develop a closer relationship with their grandfather, Seward was more critical of Meghan’s possible reasons for joining the visit.
“I feel Meghan needed the stardust of royalty to make her look more relevant than she is at this moment,” she claimed.
Neither Buckingham Palace nor the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has publicly confirmed Seward’s interpretation of the meeting.
