Prince Harry’s recent return to the UK appears to have renewed his hopes of finding a way back into royal life, even if only in a limited role.
The Duke of Sussex reportedly began thinking more seriously about his future after visiting Britain to see his father and reconnect his children with their royal heritage. However, any possible return is unlikely to be straightforward, especially because Meghan Markle is said to have little interest in moving back to the UK.
According to an insider who spoke to Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack, Harry is still considering the possibility of taking on an overseas royal role. Australia has reportedly been mentioned as a potential base.
Such an arrangement, Harry reportedly believes, could allow him to support King Charles while continuing the life he has built with Meghan and their children.
Meghan, however, is said to have “no interest” in returning to Britain, creating another major obstacle to Harry’s hopes.
The Palace is also reportedly unwilling to consider any arrangement that would allow the Sussexes to operate as part-time working royals.
A royal source said King Charles and Prince William remain committed to the position established by the late Queen Elizabeth II, who rejected the idea of a “half-in, half-out” role when Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals.
“That policy didn’t end with her,” the source said.
Despite the Palace’s firm position, Harry is reportedly still holding on to the belief that a compromise could eventually be reached.
Another source claimed the Duke believes there may be a “creative compromise” available. However, the royal institution reportedly sees the matter differently.
“The institution believes the rules already exist,” the source explained. “They’re not going to reinvent the monarchy for one family member.”
For now, Harry’s hopes of serving the King while maintaining his independent life abroad appear to remain just that: hopes.
