Charles Spencer is preparing to share a deeply personal account of his late sister, Princess Diana, ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death.
The Earl Spencer recently announced plans for a new book about Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. The book promises to introduce readers to the woman her family knew, beyond the familiar stories and headlines surrounding her life.
The announcement quickly attracted attention on social media, where many welcomed the prospect of hearing about Diana from someone who knew her closely.
“Enough of ‘royal experts’ speaking for Princess Diana in death when they were the ones who hounded her when she was alive,” one person commented. “Can’t wait to read this.”
Others were less enthusiastic about another book revisiting Diana’s life, with some calling for her to be allowed to “rest in peace.”
Explaining his reasons for writing the book, Charles said he hopes it will appeal both to those who remember his sister and to younger generations who never had the opportunity to know her.
“I hope this book will be of interest to the many who still cherish the memory of Diana when she was alive,” he said.
Charles added that he would be delighted if younger readers came away feeling that they understood who Diana really was.
He described his sister as “a one-off, dynamic character, full of love, charisma and self-doubt,” adding that she “gave life a hell of a go” and left the world a better place despite dying so young.
The book will be published by Penguin Random House, the same publishing company behind Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare.
It is scheduled for release on September 22, 2026.
