King Charles has arrived at Balmoral Castle to begin his traditional summer stay in Scotland, Buckingham Palace announced on Tuesday.
The monarch was welcomed with a Guard of Honor formed by the Royal Regiment of Scotland. During the ceremony, he also met Corporal Cruachan IV, the regiment’s Shetland pony mascot.
This year’s arrival included the first two members of the revived Balmoral Highlanders, a tradition the King has restored decades after it was discontinued in 1936. Both Highlanders work on the Balmoral Estate and are expected to participate in the Braemar Gathering in September.
The Palace also highlighted the King’s busy schedule in Scotland throughout August. His engagements have included attending the Castle of Mey Games, meeting members of the Assynt Mountain Rescue team and visiting the communities of Halkirk and Castletown.
During his visit to Castletown, Charles also officially opened a distillery located inside a restored former mill building.
