King Charles was reportedly kept in the dark about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s plans to move back to Britain until just days before the news emerged.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to be preparing to return to the UK after spending the past six years in California. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are expected to start school in Britain next month.
Harry and Meghan reportedly intend to keep their home in California, along with their property in Portugal. They will also establish a private residence in the UK, although its location has not been revealed.
The move has inevitably raised questions about whether Harry could take on a greater role within the royal family. However, he is not expected to return to official duties.
Charles is understood to have made it clear that the couple’s status will remain unchanged. Harry and Meghan will continue as private individuals with no formal royal responsibilities.
The development follows a rare reunion involving the Sussexes, King Charles and Queen Camilla. The meeting reportedly marked the first time the King had seen Archie and Lilibet in person in more than four years.
Harry and Meghan moved to California in 2020 after stepping down as senior working royals. Since then, concerns over their security arrangements have contributed to the family’s limited visits to Britain. The couple lost automatic access to government-funded police protection after leaving their official royal roles.
