Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be seeking to rebuild their profile in Britain as concerns grow over their relevance in the United States, according to a royal commentator.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who stepped down as senior working royals in 2020 and later moved to California, are reportedly preparing to strengthen their ties with the UK.
Commenting on the couple’s apparent change in direction, Sarah Vine claimed that their continued public appeal largely depends on their connection to the Royal Family.
“Harry and Meghan's currency is that they're members of the Royal Family,” she told the Daily Mail. “Yes, they're rebellious members of the Royal Family. Yes, they're disruptors. They like to class themselves that. But nevertheless, it's their royal value that's of interest to people.”
Vine suggested that Harry may feel he has exhausted his opportunities in America and now sees a return to Britain as a way to regain influence.
“And, you know, it's a land grab because I think that one of Harry's big concerns is that he kind of ran out of road in America. There were sort of no more options for him,” she said.
The commentator further claimed that spending more time in the UK could make it easier for Harry to reclaim the position he believes belongs to him.
“Whereas if he comes back here, it's much easier for him, when he's on the ground, to start the process of reclaiming what he would consider to be his birthright and reshaping the Royal Family in a way that he would like it shaped,” Vine added.
