King Charles has chosen Prince William to represent him at the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V on Wednesday, September 9.
The announcement comes as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly spending time in Britain. However, the Palace has not suggested that William’s appointment is connected to their visit.
Royal expert Rebecca English said the Prince of Wales would attend the funeral on behalf of the King. She explained that British monarchs do not usually attend the funerals of other heads of state and normally send a senior member of the Royal Family in their place.
Princess Anne is also expected to attend in a private capacity as godmother to King Haakon VIII.
William carried out a similar responsibility last year when he represented his father at the funeral of Pope Francis.
King Charles, 77, continues to manage a busy royal schedule while receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. Following King Harald’s death, Charles released a statement mourning the loss of his “dear cousin.”
The two monarchs were related through King Edward VII.
