Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly want to be called “public figures” instead of “private citizens,” but King Charles is said to oppose the change.
An unnamed source told RadarOnline.com on Friday that the King would not change his position simply because the couple disliked the description.
Another source claimed the Palace was worried that Harry could use the wording to support his case over security arrangements. According to the source, Charles does not want official Palace statements to become part of another dispute.
The disagreement reportedly began after the Lord Chamberlain issued guidance describing Harry and Meghan as “private citizens” and confirming that they remained non-working royals.
The guidance said the Palace had received questions about the couple’s status following their reported move back to Britain. It added that the King had asked for the information to be shared to prevent confusion.
The statement also said Harry and Meghan stepped down from duties on behalf of the monarch in January 2020 and were no longer working members of the Royal Family.
According to the report, the Sussex family returned to the UK last month after six years in California.
