Piers Morgan has described the public dispute between King Charles and Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, as “open Royal war.”
Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Morgan reacted to passages from Spencer’s new memoir about Diana. He said the claims appeared deliberately intended to damage the King’s reputation.
In the book, Spencer alleges that Charles told him shortly after Diana’s death in 1997: “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”
The Palace took the unusual step of responding publicly. A spokesperson said it does not normally comment on books, but suggests that grievance and family tensions can affect judgment and memory, even years after a loss.
The exchange appeared on the front pages of several British newspapers on Thursday.
Sharing his reaction, Morgan wrote: “Hard to imagine more incendiary claims, or ones more deliberately aimed to harm King Charles’ reputation. This is open Royal war now.”
Charles and Diana were married for 15 years. She died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
