Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has criticized the situation surrounding a letter from King Charles describing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as private citizens.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Fitzwilliams called the letter and the couple’s response a “total mess.”
He also questioned their handling of security concerns. While Harry and Meghan reportedly saw the issue as another example of the risks they faced, Fitzwilliams argued that their team had failed to carry out proper checks during term time.
Fitzwilliams described the King’s letter as a “slap on the wrist.” In his view, it showed a lack of trust in the couple and left them little room to explain their position.
He also warned that coverage of Harry and Meghan could draw attention away from royal engagements.
Fitzwilliams said it was difficult to predict what would happen next. However, he believes the couple’s ability to attract headlines gives them an advantage by keeping them in the public eye.
He added that this attention does not depend on whether they are right or wrong in any particular dispute.
