Two longtime friends of Prince William and Prince Harry could play an important role in repairing the brothers’ strained relationship.
Charlie and Thomas van Straubenzee have known the royal siblings since childhood, having attended Ludgrove Prep School with them. Thomas is believed to be particularly close to the Prince of Wales, while Charlie has maintained a strong friendship with the Duke of Sussex.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams suggested that their close connections to both brothers could place them in a unique position to encourage a reunion.
“The van Straubenzee brothers could pull off the most extraordinary feat if they joined forces to bring William and Harry together,” he told the Daily Mail.
“What makes the brothers ideal is that, apart from being close to both of them, Thomas is especially close to William and Charlie to Harry,” Fitzwilliams added.
Charlie’s friendship with Harry has continued through some of the most significant moments in the Duke’s life. He attended Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018 and delivered a heartfelt speech at the celebration.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 before moving to California. Despite the distance, Charlie reportedly remained in contact with Harry and visited him in the United States in 2022. The two friends were also photographed riding bicycles together during the trip.
With Harry reportedly back in the UK with his family for an “extended stay,” speculation has grown that the van Straubenzee brothers could help reopen communication between the estranged royal siblings.
Although there is no confirmation that such an effort is underway, their decades-long friendships with William and Harry may make Charlie and Thomas well placed to help ease tensions and encourage a possible reconciliation.
