Princess Diana once wondered whether she would make a good first lady of the United States, according to her younger brother, Charles Spencer.
In his new book, Swan Song: My Sister, Spencer says an older American politician wanted to marry Diana. He claims the man told her that marrying her would help him win the presidency.
Spencer writes that Diana asked him whether he thought she would be a good first lady. He says she was more interested in living in the White House than in marrying the man.
According to Spencer, Diana also liked the idea of taking on a new role that might make some members of the British royal family jealous. He suggests she imagined bringing glamour to the White House, much as Jackie Kennedy had done.
The memoir, published on Tuesday, nearly 30 years after Diana’s death, also includes claims about her marriage to King Charles and events after she died.
Spencer alleges that Charles, who was then Prince of Wales, told him, “we’ll forget her soon enough,” during an angry phone call after Diana’s death.
He says the conversation followed a disagreement over whether Princes William and Harry should walk behind their mother’s coffin at her funeral.
