Princess Diana expressed regret about sharing details of her life with author Andrew Morton, according to Dickie Arbiter.
Speaking on the At Home with Vanessa podcast, Arbiter recalled an early-morning phone call in which Diana asked what she should do after helping with Morton’s book.
He said Diana called at 5am and sounded anxious.
Recalling their conversation, Arbiter said she asked: “What do I do?”
He told her she had already spoken to Morton and asked whether she regretted it. According to Arbiter, Diana replied: “Yes.”
“Well, it’s too late now. The horse has bolted,” he recalled telling her.
When Diana asked what to do next, Arbiter advised her not to answer the phone or go out before her scheduled engagement that Thursday.
He said he would join her at the event and help her handle the situation then. Until that point, he urged her not to contact anyone.
“Whether she took my advice, I don’t know,” he added.
Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
