The Duke of Sussex described his brother’s concerns in his memoir and an ITV interview.
Prince Harry has shared how Prince William urged him to slow down as his relationship with Meghan Markle became serious.
Harry and Meghan married on May 19, 2018. Before the wedding, however, William, who is next in line to the British throne, expressed reservations about the pace of their romance.
In his memoir, Spare, Harry recalled his now-estranged brother suggesting that he was going too far and moving too quickly. He also wrote that William had been discouraging about the relationship from its early stages.
Harry offered further context during an interview with ITV, explaining that William had never tried to stop him from marrying Meghan. Instead, his brother raised concerns early on and warned that the relationship would bring difficulties.
Harry said he still did not fully understand what William had meant, although he wondered whether his brother had anticipated the British press’s response.
Royal expert Marlene Koenig offered another interpretation. In comments reported by The Mirror, she said Meghan had struggled with royal rules and argued that William had been right to encourage Harry to take more time before marrying.
Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and later settled in California. According to the report, they have since returned to the UK after almost six years for an extended stay, living as private citizens.
