Private Secretary’s Exit Could Complicate Palace Dynamics Amid Family Disputes
King Charles III, who continues to lead while battling cancer, has received troubling news regarding his top aide, Clive Alderton, who is reportedly considering stepping down. The potential departure of Alderton, often regarded as the King's "all-powerful private secretary and gatekeeper," is expected to send shockwaves through the palace and disrupt ongoing royal operations.
At 75, the ailing monarch may face additional challenges if Alderton retires, especially as the palace navigates contentious issues like Prince Andrew’s disputed residence at Royal Lodge. Royal commentators believe the timing of Alderton’s decision could not be worse, given the internal family tensions.
A royal expert suggests that Alderton’s exit might also influence the strained relationship between King Charles and Prince Harry. In his memoir Spare, Harry referred to Alderton as "The Wasp," indicating longstanding friction. Some speculate that a new, more neutral aide could pave the way for improved dialogue between the King and his estranged son.
However, royal biographer Robert Hardman cautions that any attempt at reconciliation must include Prince William’s consent. “The King cannot proceed without William’s agreement,” Hardman explained, noting that any bridge-building efforts must involve both brothers to be successful.
Tina Brown, another royal expert, highlighted the importance of Harry’s role, saying, “There remains a significant ‘Harry-shaped hole’ in the royal line-up. The British public and King Charles himself would benefit from his return, especially given the monarch’s current health struggles.”
