$90.69 Million Spent on King Charles III’s Coronation, Fuelling Speculation About William’s Plans
The cost of King Charles III’s coronation, held on May 6, 2023, has been disclosed, totalling $90.69 million. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) confirmed the figures in its annual report released on November 21, highlighting that $63.37 million came from the monarch's Treasury, with an additional $27.33 million allocated to the Home Office for policing.
This spending has drawn comparisons to Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral, which cost $204 million. Reports suggest the coronation expenses came in $3.77 million under budget.
The revelations have reignited discussions about the future coronation of Prince William. Many royal commentators speculate his ceremony will depart from tradition, focusing on environmental sustainability, homelessness, and mental health.
William is also reportedly keen on modernising the monarchy to ensure its relevance in contemporary society, marking a shift from his father’s approach.
