Queen Elizabeth II’s deep affection for corgis famously endured throughout her life, and their role in her story began even before she ascended the throne. On her honeymoon with Prince Philip in November 1947, the young Princess Elizabeth brought along a cherished companion—her corgi, Susan.
The bond between the Queen and Susan was unshakable, as the dog had been gifted to her for her 18th birthday in 1944. Susan accompanied the newlyweds on their post-wedding trip, reflecting the royal’s enduring love for the breed.
Corgis had been a beloved fixture in the Queen’s life since her childhood, with her first dog, Dookie, gifted by King George VI. The Queen went on to own more than 30 corgis throughout her reign, known for their affection but also their occasionally feisty behaviour.
Author Craig Brown humorously described the royal corgis in his book A Voyage Around the Queen, comparing them to the “Corleones of the dog world” for their unpredictability. Even Susan had her moments, yet her loyalty and charm secured her place by the Queen’s side.
The Queen’s legacy with corgis continues to this day, with two of her dogs now cared for by Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson at Royal Lodge. This long-standing bond highlights how these four-legged friends were more than pets—they were cherished family members.
