Experts Say Duchess Relies on Royal Branding While Criticising the Institution
Meghan Markle is facing fresh criticism following Prince Harry’s legal loss over UK security, with royal commentators accusing her of hypocrisy for continuing to use her royal title while distancing herself from the monarchy.
The backlash erupted after a UK court rejected Harry’s request for official police protection during visits with his family, sparking renewed debate over the couple’s ties to the royal institution.
Despite their public criticism of the monarchy, Meghan has been called out for leveraging her royal identity for personal gain. Speaking on The Sun, royal editor Matt Wilkinson questioned why she continues to use the HRH style and the Sussex name instead of her maiden name.
PR expert Mark Borkoski responded, calling the move “clearly social capital,” and suggested her team may use the title to gain access to exclusive events and high-profile venues. “It carries huge weight in America,” he noted, adding that the title helps maintain a “royal aura” around her.
He branded Meghan’s behaviour “hypocritical,” claiming she flaunts her royal ties for status while criticising the institution behind them.
Royal commentator Katie Nicholl echoed those sentiments, saying, “You’ve attacked this institution many, many times and yet want to retain all the perks and privileges of being in that institution — which is, of course, the titles.”
The controversy adds to the growing scrutiny surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex amid their ongoing tensions with the royal family.
