King Charles Handles Awkward Greeting from TV Star with Grace

Kate Winslet, Amal Clooney among stars at King’s Trust Awards reception

King Charles has been applauded for his gracious response after television star Sam Thompson accidentally called him “mate” during a formal event at Buckingham Palace.

The 32-year-old Made in Chelsea personality was attending the King’s Trust Awards, which recognise the achievements of young people supported by the charity. Taking to Instagram afterward, Thompson admitted the moment left him red-faced. “Also called the king ‘mate’ which was mortifying, but he was cool about it!” he shared.

Despite the informal blunder, King Charles appeared unfazed and continued to engage warmly with guests, earning praise for his composed and approachable manner.

The reception drew a host of celebrity ambassadors including Kate Winslet, Amal and George Clooney, Declan Donnelly, and Jamie Laing. Thompson also had the honour of presenting an award and described the experience as a “complete honour and pinch me moment.”

He paid tribute to an award recipient named Taylor, calling him “an incredibly special human” and saying his story would resonate with many young men.

The Royal Family’s official Instagram account posted photos from the event, highlighting the presence of the King and the remarkable young people and mentors being celebrated. “We are immensely proud of the extraordinary accomplishments of our young people and volunteers,” the palace stated.
