Royal aides left concerned after Princess of Wales pulls out of Ascot appearance
King Charles posted a warm message on the royal family’s official Instagram account on June 20, sharing a birthday tribute to Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, who turned 79.
“Happy Birthday to The Duchess of Gloucester,” read the caption alongside a new portrait of the Duchess.
The public message came just hours after reports claimed Princess Catherine caused “panic” behind Palace walls by withdrawing from Royal Ascot at the last minute.
Kensington Palace reportedly informed organisers earlier in the day that the Princess would not be joining Prince William and other senior royals for the event. Sources later told The Daily Beast that her unexpected absence left staff “bewildered and worried,” with some even fearing a possible emergency.
Though her name had appeared on the carriage list earlier that day, the Palace clarified it was a mistake, and that Catherine had been “disappointed” to miss the outing.
The Princess of Wales, who is in remission after undergoing preventive chemotherapy for cancer, has recently resumed limited royal duties. However, royal experts note that her schedule remains flexible as she continues to prioritise her health.
There has been no official update from Kensington Palace regarding her condition.
