Monarch and Queen Camilla express deep sorrow over shocking loss of life
King Charles has released a moving statement following devastating news of a fatal school shooting in Austria that deeply distressed both him and Queen Camilla.
Buckingham Palace issued the personal message on Thursday after a teacher and nine students were killed in Graz. “My wife and I were deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the appallingly tragic events at the Dreierschűtzengasse school,” the King wrote.
“Schools should be places of sanctuary and learning, which makes this horrific attack on students and staff all the more dreadful,” he added, offering heartfelt condolences to the victims' families and the Austrian people.
The attack claimed the lives of six girls and three boys, aged 14 to 17, as well as a teacher. A 21-year-old gunman, armed with a handgun and shotgun, wounded 11 others before taking his own life. Authorities reported he left a farewell note and video message prior to the assault.
The King concluded: “Our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those affected by this terrible loss of life and injury.”
