With their Netflix deal nearing its end, experts suggest the Duke and Duchess may be seeking royal support
Fresh speculation of reconciliation between the Duke of Sussex and the royal family has emerged after senior aides from both sides were spotted meeting in London. According to royal commentator Robert Jobson, the meetings may be financially motivated as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex prepare for the end of their multi-million dollar Netflix contract.
Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, Jobson noted that the original five-year deal—reportedly worth around $100 million—was always a key source of income for the couple. With that agreement set to expire in September and no renewal in sight, he suggested the couple could be facing a cash crunch.
"Where does it leave them?" Jobson asked. "Probably with a bit of a bowl out, looking for some handouts. Maybe that’s why they were over here having discussions with the King."
He also recalled that in the past, the Sussexes received support from both the King and the late Queen before declaring their intention to become financially independent. Now, having parted ways with Spotify and potentially Netflix, their financial future appears uncertain.
Sky News royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills echoed these concerns during the same programme. "It’s just fascinating," she said. "They have this very expensive lifestyle. They have to pay for their security, pay for that big mansion. How do you kind of keep the money coming in?"
The Sussexes signed the Netflix deal in September 2020, with plans to produce documentaries, films, and children’s programming. But recent reports suggest the streaming giant has no plans to extend the partnership.
With no confirmed projects or income sources announced beyond September, questions remain over how the couple plans to fund their lifestyle going forward—possibly prompting a renewed willingness to engage in dialogue with the royal household.
