Princess of Wales set to return to cherished Highland retreat after missing last year’s visit
Princess Kate is preparing for a special family getaway to Balmoral Castle this summer—her first since beginning cancer treatment, and a quiet celebration of resilience and recovery.
After being unable to join the royal family at the Scottish Highlands last year due to chemotherapy, the Princess of Wales is now expected to return to the estate with Prince William and their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—once their royal duties pause in the coming weeks.
Currently based in Windsor, the Waleses have a few key appearances remaining on their calendar, including Wimbledon and the upcoming French State Visit. But with the children now on school break, the family is looking forward to time away from public life.
Kate’s absence from Balmoral last summer was later confirmed by Prince William, who explained they had also missed the Paris Olympics due to her ongoing treatment. This year’s return to the Highlands signals not only a resumption of family tradition, but also an emotional milestone in her recovery.
Speaking on the Right Royal Podcast, Sky News royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills reflected on Balmoral’s special place in the couple’s life. “It’s where [William] spent all these idyllic family holidays… where he learned of his mother’s death, and where he met Kate. It’s incredibly central to his life.”
While the family is also expected to spend time at their Norfolk country home, Anmer Hall, royal experts agree that Balmoral remains a firm favorite. Kate’s return this summer will quietly underscore both her strength and the importance of family tradition in the royal calendar.
