Duchess’s silence raises questions as Duke of Sussex makes quiet gesture toward reconciliation
Meghan Markle has kept a low profile while Harry attempts to repair strained ties with the Royal Family.
According to GB News, the Duke of Sussex arranged for a friend to place a wreath of red poppies and a personal letter at the Burma Star Memorial during national VJ Day commemorations. The tribute was left discreetly after King Charles and Queen Camilla had departed, ensuring the focus remained on those who served in the Pacific and Far East during World War Two.
The move has been described as a subtle olive branch, yet Meghan’s absence from the letter and her ongoing silence have not gone unnoticed. Royal watchers have questioned why the Duchess has stayed quiet, especially as Harry faces fresh setbacks.
Earlier this year, Harry resigned from Sentebale, the children’s charity he co-founded in Lesotho, following a high-profile dispute with chairwoman Dr Sophie Chandauka. The fallout drew criticism from the Charity Commission for being played out in public and reportedly left Harry devastated. Despite expectations that Meghan would support him publicly, she has instead focused on her personal projects, including new lifestyle content on Instagram and teasers for the next season of her Netflix series With Love, Meghan.
Royal expert Dr Tessa Dunlop noted that Meghan’s silence feels particularly striking given the couple’s renegotiated Netflix deal, which is said to be less lucrative than their original £78 million agreement. “Why hasn’t Meghan come out batting for Prince Harry in the Sentebale fiasco?” Dunlop asked, contrasting her promotional voice for her brand with the outspoken one she once used after leaving royal life.
While Harry has often spoken out in Meghan’s defence, even clashing with his family to challenge press criticism of her, she has not returned the favour during his recent troubles. The Charity Commission’s report acknowledged a “strong perception of ill treatment” but stopped short of assigning blame, a conclusion Harry strongly criticised as “troublingly short.”
