King Charles Defended Over ‘Talking to Plants’ by Queen’s Friend

Lady Glenconner, 93, says she shares the King’s gardening habit

King Charles has been defended by Lady Glenconner, a close friend of the late Queen Elizabeth, after years of being teased for talking to plants.

Lady Glenconner, 93, who served as maid of honour to the King’s mother, revealed she enjoys gardening in the same way. “People used to laugh at the King for talking to his plants, but I do it all the time,” she told The Telegraph.

The King first admitted to the habit in 1986, when, as Prince of Wales, he said in a TV interview: “I just talk to the plants, really – very important to talk to them, they respond.” At the time, his words drew criticism, though gardening has remained one of his lifelong passions.

Lady Glenconner—whose full name is Anne Veronica Tennant—also shared a personal memory, recalling: “It was my mother who taught him pottery and let him drive her Jaguar.”

Friends say the King views his gardens as a key part of his legacy, and his dedication to nature has never wavered.

Her comments came as Charles and Queen Camilla were seen travelling together to a church service near Balmoral Castle.
