Duchess accused of chasing privacy and fame as questions swirl over possible return
Meghan Markle may be building a new chapter in California with her lifestyle brand and fresh public image, but according to royal commentators, she has not entirely walked away from royal life.
The Duchess of Sussex continues to face criticism for using her titles to boost her profile while also demanding privacy. Shows such as South Park have even poked fun at the contradiction.
A style expert recently noted that Meghan’s fashion choices now reflect a “modern, approachable and authentic” image, moving away from what was once described as her “duchess dressing.” Yet author Tom Quinn believes the bigger picture suggests Meghan is still holding on to her royal ties.
“If Meghan really wanted to be a private person, she could have stayed quiet in America,” he told the Daily Mail. “What she wants is privacy combined with world fame.”
Quinn added that Meghan’s situation is complex, suggesting she is “perhaps both sinned against and sinning” given her allegations against the royal family and her ambitions for the future. He argued that while some find her “Californian therapy speak” insincere, she does genuinely want to do good in the world.
Meanwhile, royal editor Duncan Larcombe stressed that the rift between the Sussexes and the rest of the family remains “worse than ever.” Even so, he noted that Harry may still have a chance at a private meeting with King Charles, though William is unlikely to intervene.
For Meghan, Quinn believes a path back into the royal fold could come through Harry or their children, Archie and Lilibet. “Meghan is a powerful personality determined to get her way,” he said, recalling Harry’s own words: “What Meghan wants, Meghan gets.”
