Reconciliation with King Charles possible, but feud with William lingers
Harry could soon take a major step toward reconciling with his father, King Charles, who continues his battle with cancer. Reports suggest the Duke of Sussex may finally secure a private meeting with the monarch when he visits the U.K. in September, following earlier peace talks carried out through aides.
But the bigger question remains: where does Meghan Markle fit into the picture?
The last time the Sussexes and the Waleses appeared together was three years ago during the walkabout for the late Queen Elizabeth. Since then, tensions have only deepened. Former royal editor Duncan Larcombe told OK! Magazine: “There’s no doubt the feud between them is worse than ever. So much has happened and there has been so much betrayal and fury. The longer they don’t speak, the deeper the feud will get.”
William, according to insiders, has even considered stripping Harry of any remaining titles once he becomes king. From Oprah’s explosive interview to the Netflix docuseries and Harry’s memoir, the public airing of grievances has, in William’s view, amounted to a betrayal of family trust.
Larcombe explained: “William was furious. While Meghan and Harry were selling their side of the story to the highest bidder, William and Catherine were quietly carrying out their duties. They never cashed in on their status.”
Despite the frostiness, experts believe there may still be room for civility between the two couples, even if a full reconciliation is unlikely. Harry himself previously suggested the “ball is in William’s court,” but commentators argue the onus is on Harry to apologise, not the other way around.
As for Meghan, her stance may be the deciding factor. “Her priorities are in America with her children and her business,” Larcombe noted. “They don’t include the U.K. or Harry’s family. She has made that very clear.”
