Former royal butler reveals the couple’s playful sense of humour
When they’re not fulfilling their roles as future king and queen, William and Catherine enjoy keeping things lighthearted with playful pranks on each other — and sometimes on palace staff too.
Grant Harrold, who worked as a butler for King Charles between 2004 and 2011, recently recalled one of William’s cheeky jokes on his then-girlfriend. “They do love playing pranks,” Harrold told Heart Bingo. “When you say play pranks, it’s more jokey; it’s silly things they do to each other.”
He explained how William once told Catherine there was a mysterious black cat roaming the estate, teasing her that the palace was a “witch’s castle.” Staff played along, insisting she had just missed seeing it. “William was just winding Kate up, and I was backing him up — and she was believing us,” Harrold said.
Harrold stressed that their humour is always lighthearted: “They definitely do have wind-ups, and they play practical jokes on each other. But it’s just fun — they do it to the staff as well.”
Their playful side also shows during public engagements. Earlier this year, William had Catherine laughing uncontrollably during a visit to an Indian restaurant when he posed as a staff member and answered a customer’s call, taking their order.
