Prince Harry and Prince Andrew’s roles reshape future for royal family

Prince William and Catherine take new approach with their children

The royal family is quietly updating protocol for younger members in an effort to prevent the issues that once plagued Harry and Prince Andrew.

Prince George, who turned 12 last month, has already begun formal training for his future as king. His siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, however, are being raised with more flexibility, with the choice to decide later whether they want leading roles within the monarchy.

William and Catherine are said to be determined to avoid repeating mistakes of the past. Harry has spoken openly about feeling like a “spare,” while Andrew’s scandals and controversies brought lasting damage to the institution.

Royal commentator Richard Eden explained, “Andrew and Harry should both stand as a warning. How you treat the ‘spare’ is very difficult. Harry grew up with resentment, while Andrew developed entitlement.”

So far, the Wales children have appeared grounded and confident during their public outings. George is already easing into early royal duties, while Charlotte and Louis are encouraged to enjoy more freedom in their upbringing.

“From everything we’ve heard, William and Catherine are making real efforts to avoid those pitfalls,” Eden added. “But in a system where winner takes all, it is never easy.”
