Duke of Westminster caught between royal brothers over godfather choice
The long-running rift between Prince William and Harry has created an unexpected dilemma for one of their closest friends.
Hugh Grosvenor, the 7th Duke of Westminster, is facing a delicate decision following the birth of his first child with his wife, Olivia. The couple welcomed a daughter, Cosima Florence Grosvenor, in London on July 27. In a statement, their spokesperson said both mother and baby were doing well and that the family was “looking forward to spending this special time together.”
The choice of godfather for Cosima has become complicated because of the brothers’ fractured relationship. According to The Times, the situation has become something of a “minefield” for Hugh, who is already godfather to both Prince George and Archie.
The tension is heightened by the fact that William attended Hugh’s wedding earlier this year, while Harry chose not to. That absence has added another layer of awkwardness as the duke considers who might take on this important role in his daughter’s life.
For now, the question remains whether William or Harry will be given the honour, or if the duke will avoid deepening the divide by choosing neither.
