Harry says the focus is on family, not media narratives
Prince Harry has pushed back on speculation about his relationship with King Charles, insisting he is focused on moving forward with his father despite what the media claims.
Harry returned to the UK last week and saw his father for the first time in 19 months, sharing tea at Clarence House during his brief visit. While in the country, he also met with several of his patronages. Only hours after seeing the King, he travelled to Ukraine with the Invictus Games Foundation, where he spoke to The Guardian about their meeting.
Harry said that, while he has ongoing concerns about security, “the focus really has to be on my dad” over the coming year. He also dismissed the long-running tabloid claim that he is “unhappy,” saying that he isn’t, though he would like to spend more time in the UK.
Some commentators have suggested that it will take years for the King to trust his younger son again, and others have even questioned whether reconciliation will happen at all. Harry rejected this view, saying that “you cannot have reconciliation before you have truth.”
He also addressed criticism of his memoir Spare, which many believe deepened the rift with the royal family. “The book was a series of corrections to stories already out there,” he said. “One point of view had been put out and it needed to be corrected. I don’t believe that I aired my dirty laundry in public. It was a difficult message, but I did it in the best way possible. My conscience is clear.”
