Duke of Sussex makes emotional return at WellChild Awards

Prince Harry has made his first major public appearance during a four-day visit to the UK, earning a warm reception as he returned to his homeland. The Duke of Sussex took centre stage at the WellChild Awards on Monday, September 8, as the organisation marked its 20th anniversary.

Harry began his trip with a private visit to the grave of his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II on the third anniversary of her death. He attended the ceremony alone, while Meghan Markle and their children remained in the US.

As patron of WellChild, Harry delivered a heartfelt speech celebrating the resilience of seriously ill children and the dedication of their caregivers. “I am always privileged to attend the WellChild Awards and meet the incredible children, families and professionals who inspire us all with their strength and spirit,” he said before departing the US. He added that the awards have “highlighted the courage of young people living with complex health needs and shone a light on the devoted caregivers… who support them every step of the way,” calling their stories a reminder of “the power of compassion, connection and community.”

One photo from the event showed Harry sharing a playful mock battle with nine-year-old Gwen Foster, who lives with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus and faces daily medical challenges.
