Duke of Sussex ties reunion to conditions involving Meghan Markle
Harry is expected back in the UK on September 8 for the WellChild Awards, a visit that could also bring his first face-to-face meeting with King Charles in 20 months. The King, who has been unwell, is said to be eager for a reunion, largely motivated by his wish to see his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.
But reports suggest the Duke of Sussex has laid out a set of conditions before agreeing to meet. According to journalist Rob Shuter, Harry’s list includes full security for himself and his family, Buckingham Palace oversight of media coverage, and royal recognition for Meghan Markle — complete with bows and curtsies.
“Harry doesn’t want another trip where he feels unprotected and exposed,” a source told Shuter, adding that his conditions reflect ongoing frustrations about his treatment during past visits.
The timing of Harry’s return is significant, coinciding with the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing. Yet the prospect of his demands has stirred tension. One insider told Shuter, “Charles wants peace and to see his son, but these demands risk reopening old wounds. Harry’s offering reconciliation — but at a price.”
Commentators have weighed in on the situation. Royal watcher Reilly Sullivan told GB News that Harry’s “wish list” centres on three priorities: reinstated security in the UK, guaranteed privacy, and full royal status for himself and Meghan. Sullivan noted that the security issue remains unresolved after Harry’s unsuccessful court battle with the Home Office, suggesting any arrangement would likely need to be funded personally by Charles.
As the date approaches, much hinges on whether father and son can bridge their differences — or if Harry’s conditions will stand in the way of a fragile reconciliation.
