Prince Harry’s Surprising Role in William and Catherine’s 2007 Split

Former royal butler claims Harry encouraged his brother to reunite with the future Princess of Wales

Prince Harry may have had more influence on William and Catherine’s love story than many realise.

Grant Harrold, King Charles’ former butler and author of The Royal Butler, told Us Weekly in a report published September 6 that Harry’s close friendship with Catherine during the mid-2000s was so strong that he once wondered if the two could have become more than friends when William and Catherine briefly split in 2007.

“They got on so well,” Harrold recalled. “When [William] and [Kate] separated … [Harry] and [Kate] got on so well that I even thought maybe Harry and her would get together. They were that close. They were best friends … So it could have been Harry and Catherine easily, I would have thought. But, thankfully, [William] got her back.”

Instead of pursuing her, Harrold believes Harry urged his brother not to let Catherine slip away. “Harry definitely would have said to his brother, ‘You’re crazy.’ I’m sure. I’m convinced of it,” he added.

The couple reunited in 2008 and went on to announce their engagement two years later.

Despite Harry’s current estrangement from the royal family, Harrold said he hopes the Duke of Sussex reached out privately during Catherine’s cancer diagnosis: “I’d be horrified if he didn’t.”
