Prince William Marks Queen Elizabeth’s Death Anniversary with Special Role

Future King steps forward as King Charles and Queen Camilla remain in Scotland

Prince William will take on a meaningful duty to honour his late grandmother on the third anniversary of her passing. Kensington Palace confirmed that the Prince of Wales will visit the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (WI) in Sunningdale on Monday.

The choice carries deep symbolism. Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96, had a lifelong connection with the WI. She joined the organisation in 1943 at just 17 years old and remained involved for eight decades. From 2003 until her death, she served as president of the Sandringham branch, attending its New Year gatherings regularly.

With King Charles and Queen Camilla spending the anniversary at Balmoral, William’s solo engagement highlights both his growing role within the monarchy and the personal significance of the day. The royal couple was seen on Sunday at Crathie Kirk for a service attended by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer.

William’s announcement also comes as his brother, Prince Harry, prepares to arrive in London for the WellChild Awards and a series of charity visits. Given the Prince of Wales’ full schedule and Harry’s own busy programme, a reunion between the siblings looks unlikely. Whether Harry will meet with the King during his stay remains an open question.
