Why Harry and King Charles’ reunion spells bad news for Prince William

Tina Brown says the monarch is warming to his younger son while growing frustrated with his heir

King Charles III met with Harry on Wednesday, 10 September, while William was tied up with engagements elsewhere. Royal author Tina Brown called the reunion a clear win for Harry and, in her words, “bad news” for the Prince of Wales.

Writing in her newsletter, Brown said the King is currently less irritated by Harry than by his elder son. She argues the tension with William stems from how his hands-on approach to parenting can read as a quiet rebuke of the King’s own record as a father.

Harry, by contrast, is on what Brown describes as a positivity push. During his four-day visit to the U.K., he kept a low profile, fulfilled his commitments without fuss, and highlighted charitable giving, including a reported $1.5 million for Children in Need and $500,000 for child amputees in Gaza and Ukraine.

Brown’s take also puts uncomfortable focus on William’s public value. By praising Harry’s recent moves, she raises the awkward question of how the 43-year-old Prince of Wales is using his £23 million a year, and whether his agenda is cutting through with the public.
