Meghan Markle Faces Backlash Over ‘DS’ Bag Hinting at Royal Title

The Duchess of Sussex’s latest video reignites debate over her agreement to stop using royal titles.

Meghan Markle has once again found herself at the centre of controversy after fans spotted what appeared to be a nod to her royal title in a new social media post.

The Duchess of Sussex, 43, shared a video montage highlighting her 24-hour trip to Washington D.C., where she spoke at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit. While the video focused on her public appearance, one detail caught viewers’ attention — a bag marked with the initials “DS,” believed to reference her title, Duchess of Sussex.

The subtle branding has sparked criticism, as many see it as a breach of the agreement she and Harry made with the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2020. When the couple stepped back from royal duties, they agreed to stop using their HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles.

This isn’t the first time Meghan’s use of her title has raised eyebrows. In a previous podcast appearance, she was seen with a gift card that read, “With the compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex,” reigniting questions about her adherence to royal protocols.

At the Washington summit, Meghan joined Fortune’s Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell to discuss her lifestyle brand As Ever, focusing on entrepreneurship, purpose-led business, and personal growth.

Despite the controversy, Meghan’s work continues to gain recognition. Her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, recently won a Signal Award in the Business People Shaping Culture category.
