Meghan Markle’s latest remarks about royal life reignite tensions, making reconciliation more difficult for Harry.
Harry’s ongoing attempts to rebuild his relationship with King Charles III appear to be faltering once again, as Meghan Markle’s recent comments about her royal past stir up renewed controversy.
The Duchess of Sussex recently spoke about her decision to step away from royal life, sparking a heated debate among royal experts. Some believe her remarks signal that she has closed the door on the monarchy for good, complicating Harry’s hopes of mending ties with his father and the wider royal family.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams noted that Meghan’s remarks were “low-key for her,” but he also pointed out that she “forgot to mention beginning destructive family rifts” during her appearance at the summit.
Another insider described the situation as increasingly complex for Harry. “With Meghan showing no regrets about her past choices, it could affect his efforts to regain his father’s support,” the source said. “Harry has reportedly assured the King of his respect for the monarchy, but he may now be torn between his loyalty to his family and his wife’s outlook.”
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard was more critical, telling Fox News that Meghan’s comments allow her to “offend and do as she pleases without a care in the world.” Chard added, “Meghan has no allegiance to the British royal family or the UK.”
However, not everyone saw the Duchess’s comments as negative. Royal commentator Amanda Matta defended her, saying Meghan’s admission that “there was no plan” after leaving royal life offers insight into the couple’s early decisions regarding deals with Spotify, Penguin Random House, and Netflix.
“Those deals, five years later, seem less like a grand strategy and more like a scramble to build stability after leaving an institution that dictated every detail of their lives,” Matta said. “It sounds more like an honest reflection on how difficult it is to reinvent yourself after walking away from such a rigid system. Nesting and healing would have been priorities, alongside simply surviving.”
