Tensions could arise over Lady Louise’s future role within the royal family
Prince William and Duchess Sophie, two of the royal family’s most trusted figures, may find themselves at odds over the future of Lady Louise Windsor. The 21-year-old daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh is currently studying English at St Andrews University, but reports suggest the Prince of Wales is considering her for a more active royal role.
As the monarchy faces a shrinking pool of working royals, William is said to view Lady Louise as a promising addition to his future team. Royal commentator Christopher Wilson described her as a “dark-horse contender,” noting that she “charms all who meet her” and could become “a decorative and useful asset” for the Firm.
However, this move could put William on a collision course with Duchess Sophie, who has long been protective of her daughter and has kept her largely out of the public eye. Sophie is believed to prefer that Louise finish her studies and maintain her privacy, rather than step into the spotlight.
Lady Louise herself has so far avoided public life, focusing on her education. Still, there is speculation that she might consider serving in the armed forces — a path that would make her the first female royal to do so since the late Queen Elizabeth.
Questions also linger about her younger brother, James, Earl of Wessex. The 17-year-old student at Radley College has largely stayed out of the public view, and it remains unclear whether he has any interest in becoming a full-time working royal.
The speculation comes as the number of royal engagements continues to fall. In 2024, just ten working royals carried out a total of 2,168 public events — nearly half the number recorded in 2011 — highlighting growing concern over the monarchy’s ability to maintain its public presence.
