Royal shares candid reflection on early birth and support for mothers
On World Prematurity Day, Beatrice offered a candid account of the isolation she felt when she learned her second baby would arrive earlier than expected. Her words followed Catherine’s recent letter calling for greater understanding of the mental health challenges women face during and after childbirth.
Beatrice, a patron of Borne, said many mothers feel pressure to appear perfect, especially when confronted with an early delivery. She described that moment as “incredibly lonely” and noted how unprepared many parents feel when welcoming children sooner than planned.
Buckingham Palace confirmed in January 2025 that Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, had welcomed their daughter Athena Elizabeth Rose. Writing in British Vogue earlier this year, she reflected on the lack of control parents often feel in these situations.
Through her work with Borne, Beatrice believes research and collective support can improve outcomes for premature babies and their families. Her message came shortly after Catherine highlighted the need to raise awareness for women experiencing perinatal mental health struggles.
