Meghan Markle and Prince Harry look to Australia as ‘escape option’ amid Trump tensions

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are reportedly considering Australia as a possible future home after comments made by US President Donald Trump sparked fresh concerns for the couple.

According to New Idea magazine, Australia is “climbing the list fast” as a potential base if the current US administration takes action against the Duke of Sussex. Insiders claim Harry believes he could face problems ranging from audits to visa complications and wants backup plans in place if returning to the UK is not realistic.

A source said: “Harry and Meghan didn’t leave a big impression on the Aussies when they toured there, but they know it’s something they can turn around should they decide it’s their only escape option.”

The insider added that while Canada has now been ruled out, Australia is their top choice, followed closely by Portugal.

The speculation comes after Trump made remarks about NATO during an interview with Fox News, claiming allied troops “stayed a little off the front lines” in conflict and insisting the US had “never needed” its allies, despite invoking collective defence after 9/11.

Those comments prompted a strong reaction from Harry, who completed two frontline tours of Afghanistan with the Army Air Corps. He said: “I served there. I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there. Thousands of lives were changed forever. Mothers and fathers buried sons and daughters. Children were left without a parent. Families are left carrying the cost. Those sacrifices deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect.”

Sources say the Duke and Duchess see Australia as a place where they could reset their image if needed and find stability should pressure in the US continue to grow.
