Sources say the couple know the moment is coming, even if they hope it is still some way off
Prince William and Catherine are expected to inherit the throne sooner rather than later as King Charles continues his cancer treatment, according to royal insiders.
Speaking to Heat World, sources close to the family say there is a growing awareness that the transition may arrive earlier than once imagined.
“It’s not something William and Catherine like to dwell on,” one insider said. “But Charles is getting older, and with his health issues, everyone is very aware that they will step into those roles sooner rather than later.”
The source added that while the future King and Queen understand what lies ahead, they are hoping there is still time before that responsibility becomes official. “There’s no denying the day is coming, but they’re really hoping to have a decent stretch of time before they have to fully step up.”
William and Catherine have gradually taken on more duties over the years, even before the late Queen’s death. According to the insider, this has given them a clear sense of what the job involves, though the reality of being monarch will be far more demanding. “Once they become King and Queen, the workload and time commitment will increase dramatically.”
Despite accepting that reality, the couple are said to be focused on making the most of the present. They want to protect their family time and put themselves first while they still can, especially during what will be a demanding handover period.
The past year has been particularly challenging. With Charles unwell at the same time as Catherine faced her own health issues, much of the pressure fell on William. “It was incredibly tough,” the source said.
Even so, the Prince and Princess of Wales have remained united. Amid everything, they managed a move to their new long-term home, Forest Lodge in Windsor, and are said to be drawing strength from each other as they face an uncertain future together.
