The Prince and Princess of Wales chose a calm, private moment at home as Catherine stayed connected with her family from hospital
A royal expert has shared new details about how the Prince and Princess of Wales explained Catherine’s cancer diagnosis to their children in 2024.
According to reports, the couple decided to handle the conversation together at home. Royal writer Russell Myers, in an excerpt from his book William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, said the approach was steady and reassuring. The excerpt was later published by the Mirror.
Myers said the parents spoke calmly, explaining what was happening and how long Catherine would be away. They reassured the children that life at home would stay as normal as possible and that when Catherine returned, she would simply need time to rest.
While Catherine was in hospital, she remained closely involved with family life through regular video calls, making sure she stayed connected despite the distance.
Prince William, Myers added, was a constant source of support for both his wife and their children. Privately, however, the period was a reflective one for him. With his father also unwell, William became acutely aware of how quickly circumstances could change for his family and for the wider institution.
The account offers a rare glimpse into how the couple prioritised honesty and stability for their children during a deeply challenging time.
