Royal expert says explosive interview deepened the divide within the Royal Family
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stunned the Royal Family when they made a dramatic decision that many believe permanently damaged their relationship with the monarchy.
After stepping back from royal duties and leaving the UK, the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle sat down for a revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. During the conversation, the couple openly discussed their struggles with the royal institution and shared several grievances about their experience.
According to royal commentator Jennie Bond, the interview became the turning point that deepened divisions within the family.
Speaking to the Mirror, Bond said the interview acted as a catalyst for what now appears to be an almost irreversible rift between Harry and his brother, Prince William. She also suggested that Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles III, has been left deeply strained.
Bond explained that the interview was seen as a serious breach of trust within the Royal Family. In particular, the suggestion that some members of the family had made racist remarks caused significant hurt and remains difficult for the institution to move past.
She also noted that the fallout from the interview may still affect the couple’s future opportunities. Bond said many individuals and organisations may hesitate when faced with choosing between supporting Harry or aligning themselves with William, who is the future King.
Despite the consequences, the expert believes the interview may have provided a sense of release for the couple.
“They had a lot to get off their chests,” Bond said, describing the conversation as a “spectacular blood-letting” that likely felt cathartic for Harry and Meghan Markle at the time.
