Sussexes stay silent on Academy Awards plans as a new biography sparks fresh controversy
As Hollywood prepares for the glitz and glamour of the 2026 Academy Awards, attention is not only on the nominees but also on the possible appearance of Meghan Markle and Harry.
The couple, who have been based in California since stepping down as working members of the royal family, are often linked to major entertainment events. With top stars gathering for the annual ceremony on Sunday, speculation has grown among royal watchers about whether the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle might make a surprise appearance on the red carpet.
So far, however, there has been no indication from the couple that they plan to attend the Oscars. Despite the silence, discussion has already begun online. Some royal fans supportive of King Charles and Prince William have suggested that the Sussexes’ absence could be interpreted as a snub, with social media debates expected to intensify around the event.
The conversation around the couple has also been fuelled by a separate controversy involving a new book by author Tom Bower. An excerpt from his latest biography, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, was published in The Times on March 13. The book focuses in part on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and revisits long-running tensions surrounding their departure from royal duties.
Responding to the excerpt, a spokesperson for Meghan Markle and the Duke of Sussex criticised Bower’s portrayal of the couple. In a statement to People, the representative accused the author of promoting conspiracy theories and maintaining an unhealthy fixation on them.
“Mr. Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation,” the spokesperson said, adding that some of his remarks appear driven by hostility rather than balanced analysis.
As the Oscars approach, it remains unclear whether Meghan Markle and Harry will make an appearance or stay away from the spotlight this year. Until then, royal fans and Hollywood watchers alike will be waiting to see whether the California-based couple turns up at one of the entertainment world’s biggest nights.
